The
Udu drum, a west African instrument made entirely of clay, is played by
slapping the palm of
the hand against the hole on the side. A stroke that keeps
the
hole sealed creates a deep resonant tone and a stroke that hits the
hole and realeses makes a shorter, higher pitch tone. The tone is
altered by
covering the larger hole all or part way with the other hand.
All
of the udu drums here are hand made on a potters wheel, and fired
either at low temperature in the electric kiln, or at high temperature
in the wood burning kiln.
